Many people see auditing as a tedious subject that is not worth exploring as it will not significantly affect improve their business.
Once someone has been formally trained, they see the benefits it can bring to an organisation. Those attending the courses are responsible for either auditing the system or managing the audit can then use their learning to raise awareness across the organisation.
Many organisations see ISO 9001/14001/45001 as a customer requirement and something they have to do – however the standards themselves are a fantastic business tool if understood and applied correctly.
They require an organisation to consider risk and opportunity, and therefore the audits conducted also need to be risk-based.
All ISO standards are risk-based and ensure an organisation identifies the issues that may become a risk as well as the needs of its stakeholders
Many people believe that risk is a negative aspect of a businesses systems. Risk is the uncertainty of an intended outcome or objective, and it is commonplace in many aspects of both the workplace and life. The positive that tends to produce risk, is opportunity, or the possibility of something we want to achieve.
No organisation ignores its risk and opportunities, it’s a fundamental part of business planning and strategy.
There are many things the management team need to discuss and address – some on a daily, weekly, monthly basis.
Take a look at the input requirements in any ISO standard and you will see all of the above as an input into management review – might not use the same terminology but has the same intent.
For consultants, trainers and auditors the most important part of the management review process is the output. Not just a set of meeting minutes, but the actions and resources highlighted to address any issues, drive improvement and manage risk.
It is vital to analyse your internal audit process and your management review process and if they are not adding value to your company, they need to be updated or changed.
