We have been advised that during the period 5th – 30th October 2020, the HSE will be carrying out its latest Construction Health inspection initiative. This initiative has 2 main purposes:
In particular, this checks will be looking at measures in place to protect workers from occupational lung disease, caused by asbestos and construction dusts.
Inspectors will be looking to ensure those involved with construction projects:
Where poor standards are found, enforcement action will be taken.
Respiratory risks are mature health topics that the construction industry should now be managing, but priority is still often given to safety, despite thousands more workers suffering ill-health at work than harmed by at-work accidents. Asbestos and dust are slow killers and construction businesses and their workers need to be aware of how dangerous and hazardous to someone’s health such substances can be.
We would advise all construction-related companies to ensure that their sites are not only fully COVID-secure, but that they have in place the necessary surveys, risk assessments, method statements, information and training, that can be evidenced during this initiative and beyond.
