Did you know that over 50,000 people take a NEBOSH qualification every year? Their qualifications are globally recognised and taken by people working in all types of industries, as well as national and local government organisations.
As of September 2019, the NEBOSH General Certificate (National and International) has a fresh new syllabus to teach all about health and safety in the modern workplace. It’s been updated with the help of over 3,000 leading experts, organisations, learners and learning partners and is known as the 2018 Specification. This new syllabus will be run here at OMS from 1st April 2020.
‘What is the new syllabus?’ I hear you ask!
Well, the updated syllabus reflects the needs of today’s workplaces even better. NEBOSH have listened to what businesses said they needed their managers to do and know, and they’ve streamlined that into new content that represents the role of a real-life health and safety professional.
They’ve also listened to their learners. They’ve updated the language to make it easier for people to understand. And they’ve changed the structure so there’s less exams and a bigger focus on practical application, which in reality, is where you will mostly apply your knowledge whilst at work.
The 2018 specification covers 2 units. These are classroom taught but assessed very differently:
With this re-assessment of course delivery there is also a reduction in learning hours, although not a loss in quality or achievement. The 2018 specification recommends 113 hours of learning compared to 133 on the old specification. The study in the classroom will still be run across 2 weeks as before, or if you’re on part time learning course it will be two days a week for 5 weeks, but we have been able to build in more reflection and revision time to assist in exam preparation and technique.
Although the course has been streamlined and made more user-friendly it does not lose any of its kudos within the health and safety sector.
For those wishing to start a career in Health and Safety, or for managers looking to improve their skill set, the NEBOSH General Certificate, or International General Certificate, in Occupational Health and Safety is the course for you and a stepping stone to other NEBOSH Qualifications.
