The Vital Role of First Aid Training in the Workplace

Accidents and medical emergencies can happen at any time and being prepared to respond swiftly can make a significant difference in saving lives. In this blog we will explore the importance of First Aid training, relevant legislation and the significance of hands-on training for nominated first aiders.

First Aid training plays a crucial role in empowering individuals to handle emergency situations effectively. There is specific legislation and guidelines that organisations must adhere to, to ensure the safety and wellbeing of their employees.

Legislation for First Aid

The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 outline the legal requirements for first aid provision in the workplace. These regulations apply to all workplaces, regardless of size or industry. Employers are obliged to conduct a thorough risk assessment to determine the number of first aiders needed and the appropriate level of training required.

The Regulations specify that employers must provide “adequate and appropriate” equipment, facilities and personnel to ensure immediate assistance in the event of an injury or illness. The legislation emphasises the need for trained first aiders, who should possess the skills and knowledge to administer first aid effectively.

Number of First Aiders Required

The specific number of first aiders required depends on the size and nature of the workplace. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) provides guidelines to help determine the appropriate number of first aiders.

For example:

  • Low Hazard workplaces (e.g., offices, libraries): At least one first-aider trained in Emergency First Aid at Work for every 25 to 50 employees and one first-aider trained in First Aid at Work for every 100 employees.
  • Higher Hazard workplaces (e.g., construction sites, food processing, manufacture): At least one first aider trained in either Emergency or First Aid at Work for 5 to 50 employees (depending on the type of injuries that may occur) and at least one first-aider in First Aid at Work for every 50 employees.

Employers should also consider factors such as shift work, remote locations, and the availability of emergency services when determining the number of first aiders needed. Small workplace businesses shouldn’t discount the need for having someone on site who can administer emergency first aid.

Emergency First Aid at Work (1 day) training enables a first-aider to give emergency first aid to someone who is injured or becomes ill while at work.

First Aid at Work (3 days) training includes EFAW and also equips the first-aider to apply first aid to a range of specific injuries and illnesses.

The Importance of Hands-On First Aid Training

While theoretical knowledge is valuable, hands-on training is indispensable for developing the practical skills necessary to respond confidently and effectively in an emergency.

Here are key reasons why hands-on training is crucial for nominated first-aiders:

  • Skill Application: Hands-on training allows first aiders to practice and refine their skills in a controlled environment, ensuring they can apply their knowledge when it matters most.
  • Builds Confidence: Practical experience builds confidence. Knowing how to perform CPR or use an automated external defibrillator (AED) on a mannequin in a training scenario prepares first-aiders for real-life situations.
  • Effective Decision-Making: Through hands-on simulations, first-aiders learn to assess situations quickly and make effective decisions. This is vital in the critical moments following an incident.
  • Team Co-ordination: In emergency situations, effective communication and coordination are crucial. Hands-on training often involves scenarios where first-aiders work together, fostering teamwork and efficient response.

The feedback from our First Aid training, whether it’s here in our East Midlands based Training Centre or delivered at a customer’s site, is that the hands-on element and delivery of our courses are invaluable.

First Aid training is not just a legal requirement; it is a moral obligation for employers to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of their workforce. By understanding the relevant legislation, determining the appropriate number of first-aiders and providing excellent training opportunities for employees, organisations can create a safer working environment and empower their employees to respond effectively in times of need. Investing in First Aid training is an investment in the health and safety of everyone in the workplace.

Thanks very much for the Health and Safety seminar last week, I have had some very good reactions to the 2 days from all the participants.

I think it is the first time I have seen auditors still smiling after a two day course and a number of auditors have said to me that it is the best course they have ever been on. From a personal point of view I thoroughly enjoyed the course and, being a course presenter/trainer myself, I know how difficult it can be keeping an “audience” engaged on what can be a very dry subject - but you did it. These courses are the first time we have used OMS as a training provider but they will be our provider of choice in the future.
